Well, I guess this will be my final posting. I had no clue how to blog before I created this site, but I am happy to say that now that the semester has come to an end, I am very comfortable with blogging and participating in the blogosphere! Thanks to Professor Brown for teaching us all about blogging and different topics in IT! Congrats to all the seniors and good luck to all of the underclassmen (enjoy the rest of your time here at UD-time flies! trust me) and happy retirement Professor Brown!! =)

Reaction to The Warped Tour Article

The article on The Warped Tour is another popular article on wikipedia that has received a great deal of attention through edits. The only part that has continually been updated on the article is the history section. My additions have remained which I'm very happy to say. This article seems to generate many graffiti-like comments such as someone posting 'The Warped Tour sucks' or a comment of that nature. I think it is great that the wikipedia community is so quick to react to these edits in order to keep the article clean and truthful. Hopefully the users who use their editting powers in a negative way are relieved of their rights to edit, yet the individual can go right back on and create a new username to continue doing what they want to do. I guess that is just something the site has to deal with by being a wiki, yet I do believe it is worth it and I do give a great deal of credit to wikipedia officials as well as the overall wiki community for keeping the articles updated and factual!

Reaction to Surf Culture Article

Wikipedia's article on Surf Culture has had a great deal of additions/modifications and seems to be quite a popular article. While there have been many changes made to the page, none of them have been very significant. Most of the changes to the page have been minor. I am very happy to say that my edits have remained on the page and I think this article would have to be my favorite article that I editted since I think it is really enjoyable to read-I advise everyone to check it out!

Th wikipedia article on the Southern Regional School District has also not changed very much since I have started editting it. One of my edits was taken down since it was false; I was surprised at how fast a false statement was taken down and I was quite impressed. The false edit that I posted referred to the fact that the sending district of Barnegat is no longer attending Southern Regional High School; This was a false statement since Barnegat students that have previously attended Southern will stay there- only incoming freshman attend the new Barnegat High School. I added a couple small facts within the article, again local truths.

Reaction to Long Beach Island Article

After reviewing the history of the LBI article, nothing drastic has been changed on it since I've been blogging about it and editting it. There has been slight additions such as external links and famous people added to the article along with 'local facts' (I would like to call it) to make the article more relevant and specific. My additions have added more local truth to the article and I plan to keep up with my editting to make sure the article remains complete and factual.

I thought it was great that Brenna created a wikipedia article for her mom's business. As I view more and more articles on my required feeds, I've come to fully realize how important wikipedia is as an information source. I think iColor Studio will definitely benefit by being on the site- good job Brenna! Although Brenna put the article on wikipedia, wikipedia is calling the article a 'stub'(says Brenna on her blog) does anyone know what that means? I viewed an article on Slashdot on 'A New Wireless Power Transmission Sheet.' This sheet is a power pad that will charge devices, such as cell phones, by just placing it right on the pad. I thought this was pretty cool and I'd like to get one, yet the product requires a special receiver and it is therefore very expensive. We will just have to wait until some compeition stirs up to drive down prices- until then, batteries are going to have to do!

I just found an article on ClickZ titled 'Should SEOs Care About Wikipedia?' and it reminded me of our class lecture in which we talked about how important wikipedia is as a source of information. Within the article it talks about the high degree of quality traffic that wikipedia generates. The great benefit to the info source is the fact that it a no cost way to generate traffic and is also a top 10 referer. To view the full article click the link above.

I completed my third and final edit to the Southern Regional School District article on wikipedia. Within the article I added in the fact that the student population has increased dramatically over the years which caused the school to add on an addition in the mid-90's. I made the article flow better by putting together the fact that the school had to expand due to overpopulation which also resulted in the new Barnegat High School. The sending district of Barnegat created the high school to take a great deal of students away from Southern to decrease the effects of overpopulation.

I thought it was a very good idea to create a wiki for Professor Brown's website so that users would be able to keep track of constant updates as well as look back at the history of the article. Creating a wiki is a great way to keep the community involved and maintain up-to-date information on different subjects. I think it is an important feature to his website and I think his current users will definitely appreciate the wiki creation.

I did my third and final post on the article Surf Culture in wikipedia. I added "The "locals only" expression is common among most beach towns, along with "Go home Shoobie/Bennie." These sayings are consistent with the territorialism that drives the beach culture and those that live on the coastal territories year round." I thought this was a good sentence to add for those people who are not aware of what shoobie and bennie mean. Shoobie is an everyday saying in my hometown during the summer when all the vacationers are down. So those of you vacationing in a beach town and someone comes up to you saying what's up shoob or what's goin on shoobie- your doing something to stick out from the local crowd (perhaps socks with sandals? that's a sure sign).

In class on Wednesday we discussed how it is important for companies to keep up with what is written on wikipedia about them. I thought this was a really good point since most people do go on wikipedia these days to look things up on a certain topic. I don't think companies put enough emphasis on the web and certain things such as creating a wikipedia article or blog are put on the back burner and are not looked at as a necessity. In the emerging IT world, it is an absolute necessity and the faster companies learn this-the better off they'll be.

I added in my third wikipedia edit on The Warped Tour last night. The edit I made stated that: "The Warped Tour also benefits up-and-coming bands and those looking to gain more recognition. The tour provides a direct market in order for these bands to obtain or extend their fan base. The bands can set up tent areas and are able to talk with those atteding the tour and sell their merchandise as well as give away promotional freebies." I thought I should add this fact in since it is another benefit to attend the tour, for bands as well as spectators.

On the Southern Regional School District article I added in the fact that the middle school and high school are located right next to each other. I thought it was a good idea to add that in, just in case people were confused about where each school was located. There are many shcools located in my area and I know it can be very confusing for visitors.

I just made an edit to The Warped Tour article on wikipedia. I just editted in the fact that most bands will retreat back to their own specified tent in order to sign autographs, meet and talk to the fans, and take photos. It's a great perk in attending The Warped Tour since die-hard fans will most likely be able to come into contact with their favorite band(s).

I just completed another wikipedia edit on The Warped Tour. Within the article I added that the individual band times and stages where each band play is marked on a large board usually centered in the middle of the venue. People who attend The Warped Tour for the first time are usually confused about which band plays when and where so I thought it would be a good idea to add that fact in the article. I just reviewed an article I found on Slashdot titled "Why Exercise Boosts Brainpower." In the article it states that after doing a study on mice, test results showed they grew new brain cells in a brain region called the dentate gyrus, a part of the hippocampus that is known to be affected in the age-related memory decline that begins around age 30 for most humans. Exercise boosts brainpower by building these new brain cells in a brain region linked with memory and memory loss. I thought the article was pretty interesting, and it just proves to show that exercise will not only benefit the body, it is now proven to benefit the brain as well.

I just completed my fourth edit on Wikipedia today in the Long Beach Island, NJ article. For this edit, I added "Long Beach Island is known to attract more of a family-oriented crowd and deviates from the crazy beach vacation one might experience in other beach towns such as Belmar and Seaside Heights." I decided to add this to the article so that readers would get a better feel for what the island has to offer. I know when I think about going on a beach vacation, I look for an area with a great deal of attractions; maybe the resort area has a boardwalk, a strech of bars, or lots of things to do during the day. At least for vacationers my age, LBI doesn't offer the crazy night-life that most college students wish to experience on their beach vacation, but it does offer a great place to spend some quality time with close friends and family.

After class on Friday, I looked over some of our required blogs and saw that the Viacom vs. Google situation is getting a great deal of attention in the blogosphere. After reading over the article in class, it was hard for me to take a side because I could see where both company's were coming from. Ultimately, I think Viacom is right in saying that their material should not be on YouTube without authorization, but under current law, Google is not doing anything wrong. If Google were putting up unauthorized media on their site, or promoting/allowing users to add media that is not authorized, then Viacom would definitely win the lawsuit. Until more formal and intricate web-based laws are enacted, more and more cases like this will come about in the future, so it's important for lawmakers to take action ASAP.

I just recently came across an article on Slashdot about Stephen Hawking and his thoughts on the origin of the universe. Since he is a very popular scientist, I decided to check out the article to see what he had to say. According to Hawking, he believes the universe spontaneously popped into existence from nothing. Hawking spoke about this subject to a sold out crowd at the Berkeley Physics Oppenheimer Lecture and his speech can be viewed through a webcast from this site.

I just completed my third edit on Wikipedia, in the article Surf Culture. Within the article, I made an addition to the Surf Pop category of music and added Fenix Tx's Surf Song. Right when I looked under the Surf Pop category, I immediately thought of this song because I used to listen to it all the time when it first came out. I actually still have the CD, and even though the song is super corny now, I can still recite every single word =)

After discussing the different surveys in class, I decided to take the VALS survey. My result was an Experiencer. According to the survey: "Experiencers are motivated by self-expression. As young, enthusiastic, and impulsive consumers, Experiencers quickly become enthusiastic about new possibilities but are equally quick to cool. They seek variety and excitement, savoring the new, the offbeat, and the risky. Their energy finds an outlet in exercise, sports, outdoor recreation, and social activities. Experiencers are avid consumers and spend a comparatively high proportion of their income on fashion, entertainment, and socializing. Their purchases reflect the emphasis they place on looking good and having "cool" stuff."

I don't agree with the results and I don't think it gives an accurate representation of the individual taking it mainly because it's comprised of less than 50 questions. I think they should lengthen the survey and include different types of questions that aren't so similar to each other, which will most likely produce more accurate results.

I thought it was a good choice in using Deer Park as one of her topics since all of the students in our class are very familiar with it and can help her by making different recommendations and additions to the page. I just completed my first Wikipedia post on this site. I completed this post just to update the information pertaining to my school district. When I was in high school, the town located right above my own went to my high school, but starting in 2005, the town created their own high school (Barnegat Township High School). Before I edited the article, it still said that Barnegat was in the process of separation, but it has successfully separated into a different school district.
